17 budding conductors participated in our summer conducting school for 2013. It was great to see a variety of ages and experience levels come together under the wing of one of the best and develop their skills as the fortnight progressed. ABODA NSW would very much like to thank the NSW Army Band Sydney for providing us with such a fantastic venue. The second week saw an average of 50 community musicians attend daily to provide a live ensemble for our students to practice their new skills. Our thanks must go to all those who give up their time to assist the summer conducting course in so many ways (if we named everyone, we would be sure to forget someone!). The NSW Army Band Sydney have, however, asked that any photos taken on the premises during the course, are not posted on Facebook or any other social media, due to their strict security regulations. Jerry Nowak has indicated that he will be returning in 2014 for yet another year of the course so prepare to be enthralled once again!
NSW School Band Festival Conference 2013
Immediately following the summer conducting school came the NSW Band Festival Conference at St. Mary’s Cathedral College. The conference was held across three days, with seminars in the morning and reading sessions in the afternoon. The seminars were delivered by some great presenters who gave wonderful insights into teaching, conducting and learning. The afternoon reading sessions were divided into three categories; basic, intermediate and advanced. Although initial enrolments seemed to be low, many did turn up on the day and I believe about 30 participants attended, with additional participants on each afternoon for the reading sessions. ABODA NSW are already looking forward to attending the next conference in 2015!
